Make Your Resume Pop With Some Inspiration from These Stellar Ideas

Make Your Resume Pop With Some Inspiration from These Stellar Ideas A professional resume writing service can help you stand out A lot of resume advice articles you’ve seen have likely told you to keep the fluff to a minimum. In most cases, this is true. Recruiters generally only have a short amount of time to read your resume, meaning you’ll have to make it count by marketing yourself and your experiences in an easily consumable way. However, there’s no reason to dress your resume up, especially if you’re part of an industry where creativity is a highly valued skill. In fact, creating an original design for your resume may be an excellent  C-level  personal  branding  tactic, depending upon your execution. We’ve  gathered some ideas for your consideration. Lead Recruiters Your Way With a Map Whether it’s in the style of classic and long forgotten cartography or in the image of today’s Maps app, you can consider making your resume resemble a map that leads employers straight to you, with all of your experiences and other relevant information to guide them and a handy directional key. You can even tuck your contact info at the bottom to steer them toward how to get in touch with you. Model Your Resume After Your Social Media Platform of Choice This takes some clever graphic design skills on your part, but it’s a creative way of introducing yourself to a potential employer. You can do this with any type of platform that gives you a personalized space, whether it’s through a profile page or a blog, or with any site that’s well-recognized and widely used. We recommend not picking LinkedIn for this choice because it’s already formatted for job hunters. You’ll want to create your own unique take on a site not typically used for career networking. Create Your Resume Out of a Unique Material This can be an especially clever idea depending on the industry you’re in, such as textiles, fashion or something similar. While it may take some extra work, you can craft your resume from fabric, handmade paper or some other material besides plain, white Xerox paper. Just make sure the end result is readable and, if need be, easy to reproduce. You don’t want to make creating hundreds of copies of a plexiglass resume your new career! Give Yourself Ratings You can easily style this sort of resume fairly normally but with some more subtle creative embellishments here and there, up until you get to the final section describing your skills. For this section, utilize a ratings system for an easily readable way of determining your level of skill in any areas you wish. While this won’t necessarily give employers the most detailed idea of your skills, it’s certainly an eye catcher! While there’s nothing wrong with the tried and true method of bullet points and short sentences in black, 12 point font, it never hurts to think outside of the box! For further tips, you can always consult a  professional  resume  writing  service. A  top  resume  writing  service  will be able  to fine tune your resume, regardless of the format.

Is Trucking the Best Job for You

Is Trucking the Best Job for YouDo you ever fantasize about quitting your job and finding a career on the open road, with just your thoughts and the radio to keep you company? If so, youre not aloneand it may not be as far-fetched a career plan as you might think. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1472832551951-0) ) Growing OpportunitiesMuch of the U.S. economy depends on goods finding their way to warehouses and stores all over the countryand in many cases, those goods are transported by long-haul tractor-trailer truck drivers. Fast delivery is becoming a major selling point for online retailers like Amazon and big-box stores like Wal-Mart and Target, which makes professional truckers animportant parte of satisfying customer expectations.Truck drivers are a crucial part of an ever-expanding supply chain by 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the demand for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers will grow by as much as 11%.The LegworkThere are hurdles to a career in truckingas tempting as it sounds, you cant just show up, standard drivers license in hand, and expect to drive a big rig to Ohio. All states require a specific Commercial Drivers License (CDL) to operate heavy trucks and tractor-trailers. Additionally, fruchtwein trucking companies require a high school degree and completion of a professional truck-driving training program. There are also personal considerations. Are you willing to be away from home for days or weeks at a time? Do you have the time-management skills to meet rigorous delivery schedules in all weather, on holidays, or on your birthday? Being a truck driver requires a strong personal commitment as well as a professional one.Hitting the RoadLets say youve honigwein all these requirements, made the necessary choices, and received the right training and recommendations. Youre ready to pack up your faithful dog and your toothbrush, and seek a trucking job. Whats the best way to do that? You may want t o start by researching which trucking companies meet your goals and your comfort level. Regional trucking companies may be able to offer you jobs closer to home. National trucking companies tend to have the broadest reach and the fruchtwein access to available trucking jobs. You should also consider whether the company will hire a rookie driver right out of the gatemany companies want their new drivers to have 3 months to a year of driving time before theyll consider hiring. This may sound discouraging to start (how do I get experience if no one will hire me without experience?), but its common in most career paths to start at the bottom by creating/locating opportunities and working your way up.The Money QuestionPerhaps the most important part of any job search is understanding what your salary will beand can be. Like other fields, trucking offers its lowest salaries to drivers just starting out, especially if you dont have the driving experience yet. However, you should know that w hile many industries have a wide gap between starting employees and long-time veterans, truck drivers have a pretty even field once youre in it.The average starting pay for a truck driver is $13.81/hour, compared to an average of $18.37/hour (approximately $38,200/year) for all drivers. This kind of parity is often a reason people choose to get started in the trucking industryyour pay is not significantly less than more experienced colleagues. If youre seeking a career that can be challenging and fulfilling while paying the bills and letting you travel, truckingcould just be the right choice for you. And if you have the ability to find Zen even in the most obnoxious traffic jams, all the better

How To Fire Someone The Right Way

How To Fire Someone The Right Way Firing someone is a scary task, even for the fruchtwein veteran of bosses. Nobody really wants to dash the hopes of a young employee, nobody wants to cause financial strife within a young persons life, and nobody wants to openly criticize another person if it doesnt lead to improvement. But once you start rising up the geschftlicher umgang ladder, having to fire someone is an inevitability one that can make you quite anxious. And there is definitely a right and wrong way to fire someone, so the questions soon becomes How do you actually fire someone? Why Would You Need to Fire SomeoneSometimes, employee performance is lacking. Sometimes, an employee is violating company policy. Sometimes they just dont mesh with the company culture. Maybe its not even your decision, but the decision of your employer. Whatever it is, the termination of an employee will inevitably become necessary. But its best to give this bad news in a way that is succinct, clear, and appropriate.Whether youre trying to fire an at-will employee, an intern, or a salaried, contracted employee, its important to do so with finesse. Thats largely because its more complex than you might think. Things like a severance package, a final paycheck, and worker comp have to be worked through by HR and higher authorities.Theres an art to firing an employee. Heres your step-by-step guide to doing it professionally and painfully as possible. How to Fire Someone1. Give a WarningFirst things first, unless the employee has committed some atrocious act, everyone deserves at least one warning letting them know that they need to step up their game. Maybe that means putting them on an improvement plan, or having a sit down meeting where you lay out what theyve done and what they need to do to get back on track.Either way, its important that you communicate with your employees. Let them know what they need to improve. Ensuring you complete this task could mean a complete 180 on behalf o f the person. And in all honestly, the process of hiring a new person can be just as exhaustingif not more sothan firing one.2. Call in Human ResourcesSometimes, you just dont know what to do when an employee continues to miss goals or deadlines. Maybe theyve consistently been disrespectful in meetings, or have shown up countless times unprepared. By now, youve already issued a warning. Youve told them that they needed to improve and they havent. Now, its time to take more extreme measures. Before committing completely to firing this employee, its important to get HR involved. Maybe they have insights they can share with you. Maybe they can intervene and have a discussion with the employee. Even if they cant, you should go to them for advice on how to approach the situation. If theres an employee contract involved, it is also important that HR is given a heads up. And its vital that they be involved from here on out if they werent already. They can put out any fires about wrongful te rmination, severance pay, and discrimination that might arise going forward.3. Plan It for Early in the Day and WeekAlways fire someone as early in the week as possible, but especially dont fire someone on a Friday. That gives them all weekend to stew and vent. Ideally, take a Tuesday or Wednesday to let someone go. This way its out of your head earlier in the week, rather than later, and you can follow up with your team, reassign tasks, or start hiring a new employee, before the weeks end. This also gives the employee time to start their job search, file any unemployment insurance claims, and get their finances in order before the weekend. On the same note, fire someone first thing in the morning. This way its not weighing too heavily on your head, and also so the soon-to-be fired employee doesnt end up wasting their time on a project throughout the day. This also gives you and the employee plenty of time to gather company property, clean out their workspace, and ask any final quest ions without having to come back after hours.4. Bring Them to Your Office to Do It in PersonYou wouldnt want someone to quit in an email, so why do you think itd be ok to fire someone in one? Set a time to sit down with the employee in private. Book a conference room and take the time to have a conversation. Lay all your cards on the table, but be blunt. But once the conversation has ended, dont disappear. Make sure you take the time to sit with the employee youve just fired. Give them some helpful words of encouragement for the future. Tell them what you had hoped for and didnt receive. Then let them ask questions. Let them get a word in. Once this is complete, and you give their hand a firm shake, your task is almost over.5. Go through with ItOne of the most important things to remember is this its better to fire an employee and have it end poorly than to not fire them at all. By this point, you have your reasons for wanting the person fired. Youve given them chances, spoken to the m, and tried to make it work. And it hasnt.Dont let fear or anxiety stop you from doing what has to be done. This can be especially difficult if youre new to the firing process, or if you have pity for the soon-to-be fired partey, but if they arent adding anything to the company and business operations, you need to find someone that will. Most people will understand that their termination is not a personal decision, but a professional one, and they wont hold it against you. You shouldnt hold it against yourself either.6. Keep the Conversation Short and SweetTheres no room for fluffy language and unnecessary small talk. By this point, the employee probably has some idea as to what is going on. By now, theyve gotten their warning, and have been contacted by HR. If they havent improved by now, then it it unlikely they will excel in this position. But when it comes to the meeting, its important to be blunt. If this means practicing in an empty conference room beforehand, then do it. Let them know what the position initially entailed. Let them know the goals they met and the goals they didnt. Then, very succinctly, tell them that you must let them gostay away from euphemisms however. You dont want to be vague or indirect. But once you say your piece, make sure they fully understand it. You dont want them to leave with questions.7. Follow up with Your TeamCommunication and transparency is key in the workplace. While it is inappropriate to discuss the firing with their fellow employees beforehand, it is vital afterwards. Send out an email after the firing has taken place to all of the members of your team speaking highly of the fired employee. Speak of their accomplishments and how sad you will be to see them go.Then follow up with your team in person. Assure them of their place on the team and in the company at large. Ensure that they dont feel insecure or shaken up after the firing has taken place. Whether the employee has been there for months or for years, its impo rtant to acknowledge them as a vital part of the business process and discuss strengths and weaknesses going forward.Once this is all said and done, you will be able to get back to regular operations with the knowledge that you are ensuring the continued success of the business. Its now time to start the search for a new individual to fill the previous employees position. Make sure your hiring manager knows what youre looking for, and let them know of the difficulties youve encountered in the past. This will ensure a smooth transition, and hopefully ensure you wont have to fire anyone else anytime soon.

How Did Corporate Jargon Grow Out of Control and How Do We Stop It

How Did Corporate Jargon Grow Out of Control and How Do We Stop It Ive often asked myself why so many of us in the corporate world feel compelled to talk about getting our ducks in a row, building straw dogs, or making sure were all singing from the saatkorn song sheet for our elevator speeches. How did this start? Who isresponsible for the blatant proliferation of jargon throughout the corporate world to the point where it is acceptable in an interview to refer to including people as baking them in? I want the single throat to choke (whoops, I just used jargon) from an accountability standpoint so I can ask them a simple questionWhy? Why Did You Do This to Us?When I finished school, my first corporate job was as a consultant working for one of the big global consulting firms. There, I was inundated with a slew of corporate expressions. I was certain that we consultants were to blame for this especially given the strange looks we often got from clie nts when we said weird things like, This new process could be met with tissue rejection. But the story behind where this and other expressions actually came from runsmuch deeper than a group of consultants coining terms to make themselves sound smart. AtThe Atlantic, Emma Greentraces the history of office talkas far back as the Industrial Revolution. She shows us that corporate jargon emergesaccording to what isimportant to the corporate world at the time of its creation. For example, theexpression low-hanging fruitemerged during General Electrics Workout days, made famous under Jack Welch, when organizations were looking for ways to quickly and easily identify problems and solutions. Similarly, pinging and double-clicking down emerged during the technology-driven Dot-com Revolution more recently. So it turns out that thepartner in my group who felt compelled to talkabout paradigm shifts wasjust a corporate-jargon-speaking product of his time(the term was coined in the 1960s by philosop her Thomas Kuhn). Being labeled as suchinstead of as a blatant abuser of corporate buzzwords no one understands would certainly feel better during therapy. These days, however, authenticity and relatabilityare more important than ever. We want people to speak to us in plain English not only in the corporate world, but in pretty much every facet of life. In politics, for example, voters are begging elected officialsto stop the politician-speak and just talk to us like normal people.Join the Conversation WhatBit of Corporate Jargon Annoys You the Most? How Do We Stop the Madness?Aside from shock therapy which really isnt socially acceptable any more one of the easiest things we can do is simply ask ourselves if how we are saying something would resonate as authentic and relatable to our audience. Does asking someone to put a straw dog together seem authentic and relatable? Or shouldwe simply say, Lets put an outline together? Everyone gets that. From there, we can challenge ourselves t o use the samelanguage at work as we would use with our family and friends. I would never say to my mother a retired elementary school teacher who worked with children who had learning disabilities that we really needed to create mindshare on how to turn the home office into the new babys room. Id simply say that we should share some good ideas and pick the best.It will take work, though. Corporate jargonhas become habit for almost all of us.Because it is used so widely, it has rubbed off on everyone. Old habits are hard to break, and new habits take time to form and firmly establish themselves.Make the elimination of corporate jargon agroup challenge foryou teams. If you are a manager, bring your employees into the conversation and ask them toregulate each other and maybe more importantly, regulateyou. Start by focusing on ways to eliminate the top 3-5corporate expressions used in your office. As the non-corporate expression goes, It takes a village.James Sudakow is principal of CH Consulting, Inc., and author of Picking the Low-Hanging Fruit and Other Stupid Stuff We Say in the Corporate World. How well do you know corporate jargon? Take the quiz here.
